Murray fit to take his place in the AEGON Championships line-up
Published:Andy Murray has confirmed he will participate in the AEGON Championships at the Queens Club in London this week.
An ankle injury that was sustained in the French Open had threatened to rule Murray out of Queens, a tournament he won in 2009, but after undergoing extensive testing on his ankle yesterday the Scot has passed himself fit to challenge.
Following a strong clay court season which culminated in a French Open semi-final defeat to Rafael Nadal, many are tipping Murray for a Wimbledon win this year with the Scot available at 6/1.
Murray will begin his preparation for a Wimbledon challenge at Queens on Wednesday against either Xavier Malisse or Matthias Bachinger after receiving a bye in the first round.
Malisse is the 4/11 favourite to face Murray in the next round but German Bachinger enters Queens off the back of a final defeat to Gilles Muller in Nottingham last Sunday, and the canny punter would back Bachinger at 2/1 to progress in to the second round.
A strong line-up at Queens means Murray faces a tough draw with potential ties against Janko Tipsarevic, Marin Cilic and Andy Roddick en route to the final, and with Nadal lining up in the other half of the draw, it will be a tough ask of the Scot to win the title.
Murray is the 7/2 second favourite to lift the title at Queens this week with Nadal heading the market at 13/8.
Nadal’s record at Queens isn’t brilliant – he’s lost in the quarter-finals in three of his last four appearances – and with the likes of Ivan Ljubicic, Jo-Wilifried Tsonga and Juan Martin del Potro in his half of the draw, the Spaniard’s place in the final isn’t guaranteed.
It’s an open week in the betting for the London event and we wouldn’t be surprised if, like last year when Sam Querrey upset the odds, an outsider took the title.
