Raul Meireles set for Liverpool exit after contract talks stall

Raul Meireles stay in the Premier League looks set to be short lived after contract talks between the player and Liverpool broke down.

The 28-year-old is understood to be frustrated with Liverpool’s new owners who are allegedly refusing to increase his wages after a brilliant season for the Reds.

Meireles was so desperate to play in the Premier League at the end of last season that he accepted a relatively meager contract with the Anfield side after his £11.5million move from Porto last summer.

Despite an excellent season that saw him voted PFA Fans’ Player of the Year, Liverpool’s new owners – Fenway Sports Group – are reluctant to offer him improved terms.

The Portuguese has allegedly been offered around Europe for roughly £13million, with Italian side Juventus thought to be at the front of the queue.

The loss of Meireles would prove a bitter blow for Liverpool fans, although the introduction of Jordan Henderson for £20million and possibly Charlie Adam and Stewart Downing may soften the blow somewhat.

Kenny Dalglish’s side are currently 10/1 to win the Premier League next season, making them fifth favourites.
