The Money Maker – Five longshots that could surprise in US Open odds
Published:Graeme McDowell, Lucas Glover and Michael Campbell are proof from recent years that it may not be one of the favourites who triumphs from the US Open odds and there are numerous contenders this year who could spring a surprise.
Looking down the US Open betting market, there are at least five contenders priced at 100/1 or greater who have the capability of challenging at Congressional and are certainly worth consideration among punters hoping for big rewards.
Leading this list is two-time major winner Angel Cabrera , who is 100/1 to win the US Open.
Cabrera has been relatively steady on the PGA Tour this year and has only ever missed the cut once at the US Open from 11 starts.
His big hitting off the tee will be an asset and he tends to save his best form for the majors, which was backed up when he finished seventh at the Masters earlier this year.
Also at 100/1 is Jonathan Byrd, who has already triumphed five times on the PGA Tour, including when holding his own against many of the sport’s biggest names to land the lucrative Hyundai Tournament of Champions.
Byrd has also finished inside the top 25 on his latest two starts to show his current form is solid.
At slightly longer US Open odds of 125/1 in Webb Simpson, who ranks 11th in the PGA Tour statistics for scoring average and has been banging on the door of victory this season with two second-place finishes.
Simpson has finished in the top 25 in nine of his 13 PGA Tour starts in 2011.
Meanwhile, Greg Chalmers and Kevin Streelman both make some appeal at 200/1.
Chalmers leads the PGA Tour statistics in terms of strokes gained through putting and in a tournament where saving par will be critical he ranks fourth in scrambling.
Streelman has achieved three successive top-ten finishes on the PGA Tour and heads to Congressional as one of the most in-form players.
