Chelsea set sights on Real Madrid duo to help title charge

Andre Villas-Boas is planning a double raid on Spanish giants Real Madrid in order to boost Chelsea’s Premier League title chances this season.

Two or three players is all it may take for Chelsea to reverse placings with Manchester United next season and new manager Villas-Boas has identified Pepe and Angel Di Maria as players to improve his squad.

Pepe’s future is currently unclear as he only has a year remaining on his contract at the Bernabeu and a new deal is yet to be agreed.

Rumours suggest that talks over a new contract have been positive, but there is still time for Villas-Boas to sway the decision of the Portuguese international, who can play at both centre back and in holding midfield.

According to Marca, Villas-Boas has already had some contact with the duo and early discussions have been much more positive with Di Maria.

The winger has been a Chelsea target for a long time, with former manager Carlo Ancelotti wanting to seal his signature before the 23-year-old decided to join Real Madrid from Benfica.

However, there is a strong chance that Di Maria will be moving on from Spain after just one season after upsetting Real Madrid by asking for an improved contract after just 12 months.

More wingers are certainly needed at Chelsea and although Di Maria is all left-footed, he has been known to also play on the right wing so that he can cut inside and have a shot.

The one problematic area may prove the transfer fee as Real Madrid will arguably want to sell for more than the £20.3m they paid Benfica last summer.

Chelsea are 5/2 in the Premier League odds and if Di Maria could repeat the 11 La Liga goals for Real Madrid last season then Villas-Boas would have a great opportunity to claim a first English league title.
