Vettel still favourite, but Webber on British Grand Prix pole

| 09.07.2011

Sebastian Vettel remains the slight favourite to win the British Grand Prix, even though it is his Red Bull teammate Mark Webber that will start from pole position at Silverstone.

Webber has given himself a great chance of securing back-to-back British Grand Prix victories after sealing his spot at the front of the grid and he is now 7/4 from 5/1 to claim victory.

Vettel, who has won six of the opening eight races of the season, will begin from the other spot on the front row and has drifted from 4/5 to 11/8 in the British Grand Prix odds.

Rain during qualifying and the ongoing technical issues regarding blown diffusers, which led to some cars being slightly altered, played a big role in the session, with Ferrari profiting and it all going wrong for McLaren.

Fernando Alonso enjoyed his best qualifying session of the season to get to within one-tenth of the Red Bulls and will start from third on the grid.

Alonso’s odds to win the British Grand Prix have slimmed slightly from 5/1 to 7/2.

Meanwhile, despite the high speed corners not typically favouring Ferrari, Felipe Massa ensured that the team take up the whole second row and may be the darkhorse to achieve victory at 16/1.

Pace was certainly an issue for McLaren, with Jenson Button taking fifth on the grid, while Lewis Hamilton faces difficulties from back in tenth after driving a vehicle that was virtually alien to him.

Hamilton was over two seconds off pole and will have to try to move through the field on a circuit where overtaking is generally difficult.

In terms of individual gains, Paul Di Resta did remarkably well to qualify in sixth spot for his first British Grand Prix in his Force India.
