Liverpool poised to gazump Arsenal and City for England defender
Published:Gary Cahill has long been sought after by the Premier League’s top clubs and it now appears that Liverpool may have come up with a deal which will tempt Bolton boss Owen Coyle.
According to the Sun, Kenny Dalglish is poised to offer £10million plus striker David Ngog on a permanent deal and young starlet Raheem Sterling on loan, to secure the services of the 25-year-old centre half.
Reportedly Cahill is valued at around £17million by Bolton and despite being linked with a move to Merseyside throughout the summer, Bolton have yet to receive an official bid for the player.
Reportedly both Arsenal and Manchester City have been tracking Cahill, but Liverpool could land his services by offering one of Bolton’s targets as part of the deal.
Coyle has long been an admirer of Ngog and has been after him for some time after the Frenchman was told he was surplus to requirements at Anfield.
The Trotters boss has also enjoyed success over the last two seasons in bringing young English players to the club on loan, so the chance to work with Sterling may interest Coyle, although at 16 he is much younger than previous loan signings Jack Wilshire and Daniel Sturridge.
Speaking at the weekend after his side’s 4-0 win at QPR, Coyle said that “it would not be ideal” to lose Cahill, but he is aware that selling his prized asset will allow him to strengthen his squad before the close of the transfer window.
If Dalglish can persuade Bolton to part with Cahill it will provide the solid defensive base the Scot has been looking for.
The Anfield club are currently 11/1 to win the Premier League title this season.
But Dalglish knows if this is to become a reality he must strengthen a defence which conceded 15 goals in five pre-season outings and which was unable to keep a clean sheet in their Premier League opener at home to Sunderland.
