Murray cut from 8/1 to 5/1 for US Open after defeating Djokovic
Published:Novak Djokovic may have retired in yesterday’s Western and Southern Open final but Andy Murray was on course for a comprehensive victory when the Serb called it quits.
A set and a double break up, Murray was cruising to his second ATP Tour title of the season and what a time to get it with just eight days until the start of the US Open.
Murray seems back to his best at the moment and barring that shock first round defeat to Kevin Anderson in Montreal a fortnight ago, Murray has made at least the semi-final in his last five tournaments, including the French Open and Wimbledon.
Add to that his final appearance in the Australian Open earlier in the season and Murray is in strong form ahead of the final Grand Slam tournament of the season.
The Scot was as big as 8/1 on Saturday to win the US Open but following his default victory over Djokovic yesterday, Murray is now 5/1 alongside Roger Federer to win the US Open.
Djokovic has been lengthened slightly to 6/4 from 5/4 but ante post backers will be eagerly awaiting news on the Serb’s sore shoulder.
Djokovic was poor yesterday and it was obvious the effects of his shoulder were taking its toll, and the Serb will be bitterly disappointed to have suffered just his second defeat in 61 Tour matches this year.
The world number one has seven days to recover before the start of the US Open in New York next week and while there will be small concerns surrounding the Serb’s fitness, he should be fine to bid for a third Grand Slam of the season.
