Wenger said to still want three more faces at Arsenal

| 07.08.2011

Former Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein believes that Arsene Wenger is still aiming to bring in three new faces for the upcoming Premier League season.

Wenger is currently enduring his toughest period at Arsenal since being appointed manager in 1996, with doubts lingering as to whether he can assemble another title-winning side.

Arsenal finished fourth last season and improving on this position will be tough if midfield lynchpins Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri leave the Emirates this summer.

Gervinho has arrived from Lille, while it is known that Wenger is hoping to bring in another central defender.

Numerous reports in recent weeks have linked Arsenal to Blackburn’s Chris Samba, Everton’s Phil Jagielka and Gary Cahill of Bolton.

But according to Dein, greater strength in depth is also being sought in other areas.

Dein told Radio 5 Live’s Sportsweek: “I know for a fact he’s trying to bring in another two or three players if he can.”

He added that Wenger remains the best man to lead Arsenal despite his trophy drought spanning six years, particularly as the current board would struggle to find anyone to match the accomplishments of the Frenchman.

With Liverpool significantly strengthening their squad this summer and Tottenham expected to be threats, Arsenal have a fight on their hands to retain their spot in the top four this season.

The last few seasons have brought about opinions that Arsenal’s time in the top four might be up, but they have always managed to secure their spot in the Champions League for the following campaign.

Arsenal have been friendless in the Premier League betting to win the title as they have drifted out to 10/1, although they have been steady at 4/7 to retain their spot in the top four.
