Wolves winger becomes latest to be linked with move to Arsenal

The Arsenal scouting team were left disappointed when visiting Portman Road for Ipswich Town’s pre-season friendly with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

Having made the 64 mile trip north the Arsenal scouts arrived at Portman Road to find out that their chief reason for going was a late withdrawal having not yet recovered from a minor groin injury, and Matt Jarvis remains an elusive target for Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger has been interested in the winger who made his England debut last season for quite some time, and while the Arsenal manager is preoccupied with a move for Valencia’s Juan Manuel Mata, he is also keen on a move for the Wolves winger.

While English players have come at a premium in this transfer window, it is believed a bid in the region of £7m would lure Jarvis away from Molineux, and having had a taste of international football, the 25-year-old will be keen to further his career with Arsenal.

The home-grown quota has seen a number of teams increase their number of British players with Manchester United and Liverpool paying big money for England’s brightest talents and Arsene Wenger is keen on adding home-grown talent.

For a long time Arsenal were castrated by the English football fans for not having any British players in the first team but the emergence of Jack Wilshere, Keiron Gibbs and Aaron Ramsey, plus the signing of Theo Walcott has changed that.

Wenger is keen to usher in a new generation of British-born players at Arsenal and while some may question Arsenal’s move for Jarvis when they are so close to signing Mata, the performances of the Wolves winger last season suggest he’s capable of big things.

Jarvis may have only weighed in with five goals last season but he created the same amount of Premier League goals as Ryan Giggs, Dirk Kuyt, Matthew Etherington and Charles N’Zogbia.

Only two Arsenal players created more goals than Jarvis last season and he would be a strong acquisition for the Gunners.
