Fitness has to be considered a major factor here, given that Darcis was forced to fight through five sets to beat Dmitry Tursunov, while Chela’s first-round opponent Marinko Matosevic retired after four games. The Argentine was a quarter-finalist in 2007.
Robby Ginepri v John Isner
The biggest odds that we are taking are the 9/2 on Ginepri winning this all-American showdown. Why? They are 1-1 head-to-head, with Ginepri triumphing last time out and claiming a set in the one he lost. He has also reached the semi-finals of his home event before.
Ivan Ljubicic v David Nalbandian
Ljubicic has won five of his eight meetings with Nalbandian but the Argentine was a convincing victor in their only clash since 2007 in Cincinnati last year, and has achieved more at Flushing Meadows, last bowing out this early in 2006.
David Ferrer v James Blake
You have to go back a decade to find the last time Blake wasn’t in the third round at the US Open, barring 2004 when he didn’t compete, so given that he is 2-0 against fifth seed Ferrer, beating him in straight sets at Indian Wells last year, an upset appears on the cards.
