Arc winner helps Bolton punter land £294,265.65 from £12 bet

A CARPET FITTER from Bolton won a sensational £294,265.65 after staking £12 on seven winning horses on Sunday.

The incredible haul included the 20/1 shock winner of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris, Danedream, which he claimed was “a certainty”. The punter, who has requested anonymity, also backed three other British winners at the Paris course including 14/1 sprint winner Tangerine Trees on a day when the bookies were celebrating some of their best ever results at the course thanks to a series of upsets.

The Bolton Wanderers fan also admitted that after his side’s crushing home defeat to Chelsea he may have been the only man in the town with a smile on his face: “I would have been the only man in Bolton cheering. I’m a big football fan but I reckon I might stick to the horses for the time being.”

He added: “I wouldn’t say I’m a religious form student but I knew Danedream was a certainty. I’d been waiting all week to back it.”

Whilst the British raiders were totting up the punters’ haul in Paris, ‘The Real Article’ cruised to victory in Tipperary and minutes later Painted Sky did the business at Uttoxeter at 8/1. Shu Lewis was the final winner of the day at the Irish course at odds of 7/2.

The punter admitted to having won no more than two or three hundred pounds before despite doing the same bet every weekend for over 20 years. “I spread my money out every weekend across all the courses but have never even come close to this. To be honest it’s not sunk in yet and I’ve no idea what I’ll do with the money as I’m still on cloud nine.”

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “Every shock result in Paris was being greeted with moans from the punters and cheers from us. One man back in England was jumping for joy every time an outsider crossed the line in front and we take our hat off to his incredible win.”

He added: “He’s lived the dream of every small-staking weekend punter and is proof nothing is impossible.”
