Quick adaption a big boost to Alonso’s Indian Grand Prix chances

Fernando Alonso may have found winning races difficult in his Ferrari this season, but he may be the driver to beat in the Indian Grand Prix given his ability to quickly accustom himself to the demands of a new track.

The Indian Grand Prix is the latest addition to the Formula One calendar and with the race never being hosted before, teams are virtually going in blind in terms of knowing what to expect.

Especially in terms of tyres it could be a fairly long winded process to identify the correct strategy.

The only prior knowledge that teams and drivers will have is rehearsals on simulators and as helpful as this is, much will still be different when a car gets out onto the track for the first time.

Alonso has stated in an interview with Spanish newspaper Marca that it only takes him seven laps to fully adapt to a real track from a simulator and then he is 100 per cent sure that he can begin to set quick times.

The Spaniard has a proven track record at starring on new Formula One circuits, winning the first Singapore Grand Prix in 2008 and then taking the chequered flag in the inaugural Korean Grand Prix last year.

Therefore, Alonso may be the best bet in the Formula One odds to win the Indian Grand Prix at 7/1.

Furthermore, although Alonso’s Ferrari is arguably slower than both the two Red Bulls and two McLarens, it does have a race victory to its name this season at the British Grand Prix.

Alternatively, a safer betting opportunity may prove the 1/1 that Alonso finishes on the podium or 2/9 that he is inside the top six.

One thing that is for sure is that Alonso will have his sights on victory as he is still in with a realistic chance of claiming second spot in the drivers’ championship this season behind Sebastian Vettel.
