Rugby World Cup: Williams set to return for Wales against Fiji
Published:Wales’ record try scorer Shane Williams looks likely to be in the starting line-up to face Fiji in Hamilton this Sunday after recovering well from a thigh strain.
It’s a crucial game for Wales who must pick up at least a point to qualify for the quarter finals – assuming South Africa live up to their billing as big 1/14 favourites and hammer Samoa who are currently second in Pool D.
Williams scored Wales’ decisive try in their 17-10 win over Samoa in their second Pool D game and having him back in the starting XV will be a huge boost to Warren Gatland and his side.
Wales medical manager Prav Mathema said: “Shane is recovering well.
“He is back up and running and we are pleased with his progress. The next 48 hours will be essential in determining whether he may be available to us this weekend.”
It’s not all good news for Wales who will be without flanker Dan Lydiate who has an ankle problem and utility back James Hook who is suffering with a shoulder injury.
However, they will be fit for the knockout stages and a potential quarter final clash with Declan Kidney’s Ireland – if their teammates are able to get the result they need against Fiji.
Wales head into the game as favourites over Samoa to qualify for the quarter finals at 1/33, with the South Pacific side out at 10/1 to make it to the last eight.
