Genk trip perfect tonic for Blues despite Didier Drogba absence

Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas believes his side are still on the right track – despite a dreadful week in the Premier League that saw them lose consecutive games for the first time in just under a year.

Following their 1-0 defeat to QPR, the Blues then lost 5-3 against Arsenal at the weekend in a performance that was as far away from the solid, defensively minded team of the past few seasons as it was possible to get.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Villas Boas said: “I think you have to be frank and say that our progress was stopped in a disastrous week for us in terms of results.

“But that doesn’t mean that what’s being built is wrong, that the philosophy is wrong, and that we’re not on the right track. We are on the right track.”

There was further bad news for the Blues who will now be missing Didier Drogba for their game against Genk this evening as he has to undergo surgery to remove screws inserted into his arm during a previous operation.

As Drogba will miss the next two Premier League games through suspension following his sending off against QPR though, the decision was taken to perform the operation now – despite it meaning he will miss the Genk clash.

However, that should make very little difference to Chelsea who swept aside the Belgians 5-0 in their match at Stamford Bridge a fortnight ago.

The Blues are 2/9 to get the win this evening, while their hosts are out at 12/1 to bag their first win of their Champions League campaign.

With Villas-Boas convinced playing open, attacking football is the way forward though, a better bet may be to back a repeat of the rout in their first meeting.

Putting some cash on over 3.5 goals at 11/8 may be well worth considering.
