Latest shambles means time is running out for Martinez and Wigan

Dave Whelan has always been unfailingly supportive of Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez – but even his patience must be wearing thin.

Wigan slumped to another dire defeat at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, with Mick McCarthy’s men ending their own poor spell with a 3-1 win.

The loss means Wigan are bottom of the Premier League table with just five points from their opening 11 games.

They have lost their previous eight and – based on their toothless attack against Wolves – it’s hard to see them getting out of trouble any time soon.

Martinez is currently 5/2 to be the next boss sacked but, despite their dreadful run, there are two bosses at shorter odds to be turfed out next.

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce 9/4 second favourite after his side’s poor start to the season.

The Black Cats once again rolled over against Manchester United yesterday and had to endure the sight of Connor Wickham leaving the pitch with suspected knee ligament damage.

It leaves the North East side severely depleted up front and, with an attack that was only the 11th best in the league anyway, that could prove a massive blow to Bruce’s hopes of clinging on to his job.

Favourite though is Blackburn Rovers manager Steve Kean at 4/7.

He is so disliked by certain sections of the Rovers support that they hired a plane to fly over Ewood Park on Saturday with the message ‘Steve Kean Out’ trailing behind it.

Now that’s one way to get around the banner ban.
