Leading Tottenham and QPR target submits transfer request

| 17.01.2012

Blackburn manager Steve Kean has outlined on numerous occasions his desire to keep his best players at the club during the January transfer window.

His hopes of that occurring now look to have disintegrated though, with centre-half Chris Samba handing in a transfer request for the third window running.

Despite a failure to push a deal through in these previous attempts to leave the club, the Congolese defender looks set to clinch his move this time around with a lengthy list of potential suitors ready to snap him up.

Among the main contenders for his signature are Tottenham, who are desperate to shore up a defence that could hamper their assault on the Premier League title.

QPR are also in the frame, with boss Mark Hughes keen to reunite with the man he brought to England when in charge of Blackburn, to bolster his new club’s survival chances.

The towering defender’s value has rocketed since he signed for Rovers in a £450,000 deal from Hertha Berlin in 2007, and his dominant displays have also attracted attention from clubs outside of the Premier League.

Oil-rich Paris Saint-Germain have declared an interest in the stopper, and the £15 million fee that it is suggested owners Venky’s will demand for his services would be less problematic for them than any of the other interested clubs.

That said, Samba had previously planned to stay in England, signing a long-term contract at Ewood Park to end a transfer wrangle only a year ago.

Keeping this in mind, long-term admirers Spurs would seem to have a chance of landing him, but fellow Londoners QPR’s chances of completing the deal will be significantly boosted with the presence of Hughes at the helm.

Owner Tony Fernandes has promised the Welshman significant funds to spend also, while Harry Redknapp must likely sell before he buys, and so the Rs would seem to be in the driving seat to tie up a deal.
