Man Utd rumoured to be in for Modric despite Scholes return

Paul Scholes made a winning start to his second spell at Manchester United but his shock appearance in their 3-2 victory over Manchester City did nothing to quell the belief that United are lacking real quality in the middle of the park.

Scholes was solid if unspectacular during his second-half spell, although one sloppy pass was pounced on by City and the brilliant Sergio Aguero took advantage to bring it back to 3-2.

However, the fact that Scholes even has to be called upon is something that will worry many United fans and, despite Sir Alex Ferguson denying plans to dip into the transfer market this January, the rumours continue to fly.

The Daily Mail are reporting that United are looking to bring in Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luca Modric who has once again been excellent for Spurs this season.

If that were to happen – and it’s a big ‘if’ – then that wouldn’t happen until the summer and there is even a very real chance that Spurs will finish above United this season making the move even trickier to imagine.

United are currently 5/2 to win the league with Spurs a little further out at 9/1 to win their first ever Premier League title.

Meanwhile, the Sunday Mirror reckon Manchester City are pondering a £60million bid for Wayne Rooney – but that’s never going to happen.

Finally, there continues to be rumours about United stepping in to pick up Gary Cahill from Bolton Wanderers.

Cahill looks certain to move this January and with talks with Chelsea continuing to stall, The People thinks Ferguson could step in and pick up the defender.

Cahill is out of contract in the summer so Bolton will be keen to get rid of the player in this window – even with the Trotters 1/2 to be relegated to the Championship.
