Warnock sacking leaves Mark Hughes favourite for QPR job

| 08.01.2012

Mark Hughes has emerged as the early favourite to take charge of Queens Park Rangers following the sacking of Neil Warnock.

Warnock parted company with QPR on Sunday afternoon following their 1-1 FA Cup draw with MK Dons.

He leaves the Hoops after two years in charge that saw him take the west London side to the Championship title last season.

However, things in the Premier League have been rather trickier for QPR than many people envisaged and they are currently just one spot and one point off the relegation zone.

Their poor run of form that has seen them go nine games without a win has meant their relegation odds have been slashed and they are currently 7/4 to drop back to the second tier.

The board will be hoping the appointment of a new manager will see them rapidly climb the table and the task looks set to fall to Hughes.

Hughes has a proven record with teams like Blackburn Rovers and Fulham and is huge favourite to take the role on at 1/2.

He left Fulham at the end of last season after questioning their ambitions and if there is one thing QPR are, it’s ambitious.

If Hughes does take charge then he now faces a tough couple of weeks in the transfer market as he will undoubtedly have to add to the squad to give them the best chance of survival.

Outside of Hughes though, things start to get a little longer in terms of price.

Gianfranco Zola is second favourite at 4/1 while Steve Bruce – who hardly covered himself in glory at Sunderland – is 6/1.

It’s hard to see anyone other than Hughes being offered the job and, even at such short odds, backing Hughes at 1/2 looks like a fantastic bet.
