Gerrard favourite to be England captain after John Terry axe
Published:John Terry has been stripped of the England captaincy for the second time in his career leaving Fabio Capello to once again pick up the pieces ahead of England’s Euro 2012 campaign.
The decision was taken by the FA after a hearing into Terry’s alleged racial abuse of Anton Ferdinand was adjourned until July 9 – after the championships had taken place this summer.
FA chairman David Bernstein called Terry to let him know of the decision this morning.
It is the second time in his career Terry has had the armband taken off him. The first time saw him stripped of the role prior to England’s disastrous 2010 World Cup campaign after the Chelsea defender was alleged to have had an affair with Wayne Bridge’s former girlfriend, Vanessa Perroncel.
Steven Gerrard is the man expected to take on the role this summer and is the odds-on 2/5 favourite to take the armband for the Euro 2012 opener against France.
Meanwhile, Joe Hart is next in at 5/1. Hart’s teammate Gareth Barry earns an 8/1 quote while Chelsea’s Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole are outsiders at 20/1 and 33/1 respectively.
Terry is also now odds-on (8/11) to not start the opening match against France.
Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “Gerrard appears the obvious choice with the odds reflecting that. Should the armband be passed to another Chelsea player punters will be in for a bumper payday.”
