Man Utd must try to offer Real Madrid star Premier League return
Published:At £80m, Cristiano Ronaldo’s move from Manchester United to Real Madrid remains the largest fee ever paid for a footballer.
Three years after his dream move though, Ronaldo’s time at the Bernabeu appears to have turned sour, despite an incredible 117 goals in 121 appearances in all competitions for Los Blancos.
Ronaldo’s attitude is the reported source of frustration for many Madrid fans, and he has been made somewhat of a scapegoat regarding this, along with failings in recent Clasico ties with arch rivals Barcelona.
As a reaction, the Portuguese winger is said to have become disillusioned with life in Spain, under the notion that he can seemingly do no more to win the supporters over, and is said to want to return to the league where he initially became an international superstar.
The 27-year-old remains in regular contact with former mentor Sir Alex Ferguson, and it is believed that his preference would be a return to Old Trafford, where he smashed well over 100 goals in his first spell at the club.
However, with Real keen to recoup much of the world record transfer fee that they paid, Ferguson could be priced out of a move for the man he nurtured into one of the world’s finest players.
£80m would undoubtedly be too big of an outlay for the Glazer-owned Salford side, though they would be able to break the £30.75m transfer record they set with the 2008 capture of Dimitar Berbatov.
One club the extortionate transfer fee and astronomical wage demands would not be a problem for is Manchester City, who will be sure to monitor the situation closely.
Real Madrid’s current manager Jose Mourinho has also outlined his desire to return to England, and would be keen to be reunited with his reliable forward, meaning much could depend on which club the Portuguese manager takes charge of too.
