Wales can complete Six Nations Grand Slam after England success

With Triple Crown success achieved after a 19-12 victory over England at Twickenham on Saturday, Wales are now odds-on at 4/6 to complete the Grand Slam in this year’s Six Nations, with two games left to go.

Only their second win at Twickenham in well over 20 years, the Welsh victory was significant in showing how far they have come in recent years, and now the side that performed so admirably in the 2011 World Cup looks poised to maintain a 100 per cent record in the championships.

Tournament minnows Italy will not cause any sort of real threat to the Welsh unbeaten record on their visit to the Millenium Stadium, but their Six Nations closer at home to World Cup finalists France is likely to be a tournament-decider, and so a more difficult task will be offered, though it is one that Warren Gatland’s side should meet with relish.

Never ahead in Saturday’s game until Scott Williams’ try just four minutes from time, the never-say-die attitude of ‘the Red Dragons’ will stand them in good stead to complete a third Six Nations Grand Slam, and their first accolade of the kind since 2008.

The likes of sole try scorer Williams should be afforded the chance to build on a fledgling international career which has featured five tries from just ten appearances, and exciting prospects such as he will give variety to an already strong attack that look good to overcome anybody, especially in front of a vociferous home crowd.

Full-back Leigh Halfpenny continued his tremendous Six Nations form against England also, and his kicking could once again make the difference against Phillipe Saint-Andre’s France.

Impressed by the nature of his side’s performances so far, Gatland will not allow his men to rest on their laurels at the business end of the tournament, and with just two games to go, Wales look a great bet even at a short 4/6 to complete the Grand Slam.
