Chelsea want former winger back to boost title challenge next season
Published:A few new faces are almost certain to arrive at Chelsea next season, but one old timer could also return to Stamford Bridge with the hope of making a greater impression than he did in his first spell with the club.
Despite winning the Premier League title on two occasions, alongside an FA Cup and a Carling Cup, Robben’s career at Stamford Bridge will be remembered as a bit of a flop.
Things started brightly for Robben upon signing for Chelsea in 2004, but after narrowly missing out on the PFA Young Player of the Year accolade, a raft of injuries saw his performances subside.
He was eventually sold to Real Madrid in 2007 and after another injury-plagued spell, he has found his calling at Bayern Munich, where he has revelled alongside fellow attackers Franck Ribery and Mario Gomez.
Bayern are reluctant to lose Robben and have reportedly offered to make him the highest earner in the club’s history in an effort to encourage him to sign an extension on his current contract that ends next year.
But Chelsea could match this sum of around £170,000 a week and the Dutchman will feel he still has unfinished business with the Chelsea fans from his previous spell.
Robben recently showcased his ability in Holland’s 3-2 victory over England with two goals and this performance has also caused Manchester City to keep tabs on the Dutchman.
Roberto Mancini could arguably still do with an out-and-out winger as he has been forced to play Mario Balotelli or Samir Nasri in the wide positions even though this is not their natural position.
Adam Johnson and James Milner are arguably the only actual wingers at Eastlands and neither are truly of the class at present to take the club to top European honours.
Chelsea are 5/4 in the Premier League odds to finish in the top four this season and accomplishing this feat and qualifying for the Champions League could be a major boost to their hopes of signing Robben.
