Spurs’ form sees England manager odds shake-up as Redknapp drifts

It initially seemed certain that Harry Redknapp would succeed Fabio Capello as England manager, but his odds have drifted slightly from 1/6 to 1/4 to take control after a disastrous fortnight saw his title challenge with Tottenham collapse.

Roy Hodgson meanwhile, has been cut from 16/1 to just 8/1 to get the job in the same time, this on the back of a 5-1 thrashing of local rivals Wolves, a 4-0 mauling of Sunderland, and superb 1-0 triumph over Champions League contenders Chelsea.

While Redknapp remains odds-on, the 1/4 price doesn’t appear to offer any sort of real value, and whilst not too much should be read into Spurs’ recent defeats to Arsenal and Manchester United, Redknapp’s admittance of feeling slightly jaded even now, would seem to signify that he may be reluctant to commit to the role.

He could also opt to continue his tremendous work at White Hart Lane, where he looks certain to deliver a second top-four finish in three years, and may prefer the day-to-day bustle of club management ahead of the intense media pressure and rigmarole that comes with the England job.

Hodgson however, has previous international management experience with Switzerland and Finland, and has in the past stated that he would be willing to take on the job should he have the full backing of the public for it.

Although it is not seen as a requirement by the FA that Capello’s successor is English, it is certainly preferable, and Redknapp and Hodgson appear the only potential native candidates, as Alan Pardew seems a more far-fetched option.

With West Brom playing terrific football and winning games currently, it could be worth investing in the 8/1 odds for Roy Hodgson to be the next England manager while he is available at that price.
