Dalglish favourite for the axe despite much-needed win

Kenny Dalglish is now the stand-alone favourite at 4/1 to be the next manager in the Premier League to leave or be removed from their post.

The Scot saw his Liverpool side overcome Blackburn with only ten men this week, after goalkeeper Alexander Doni was shown a straight red card, leaving Dalglish with a goalkeeping crisis ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup semi-final with Everton.

The 3-2 victory secured the Reds first win in five games, thanks to an injury-time winner from the much-maligned Andy Carroll.

Despite this win in difficult circumstances and against aside battling for their lives, Dalglish has emerged as the man most expected to face the axe, be that before the end of the season or in the summer.

It has been a turbulent campaign on Merseyside, expectations were high after the Liverpool legend adopted a transfer policy favouring honing in on home grown talent, with the likes of Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Carroll arriving since January 2011.

At first Dalglish’s policy was admired, but since the Carling Cup success, back in February, everything seems to have gone wrong for the Anfield club, who are in serious danger of finishing outside the top eight for the first time since 1962.

Scoring goals has been a problem all season, and having only hit the target 40 times in the league this term it is easy to see were the ex-number seven’s men are going wrong.

However, it would appear that Dalglish’s job may well rest on FA Cup success.

The Liverpool boss is believed to have held talks with the American owners of the club before the game at Ewood and it was made clear that silverware was crucial if he is to remain in charge.

Liverpool face local rivals Everton in the semi-final of the tournament, and after falling behind the Toffees in the league it could be the final straw for King Kenny if they are beaten by David Moyes’ in-form team at Wembley.
