Westwood and Donald still in the hunt as McIlroy flops in Florida
Published:World number one Rory McIlroy’s torrid run at Sawgrass continued as he once again missed the halfway cut at Sawgrass for the third consecutive year.
The Northern Irishman once again struggled to get to grips with the Florida course as the Americans led the field in a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard.
Matt Kuchar (5/1 fav), Zach Johnson (6/1) and Kevin Na (12/1) all finished the second round on eight under, with new favourite Johnson shooting an impressive six under on day two.
Johnson carded the lowest score of the round, including eight birdies, blighted only by a last hole bogey that stopped him taking the outright lead.
Brits Lee Westwood (14/1), Luke Donald (16/1) and Ian Poulter (33/1) remain in with a shout, tied for seventeenth on three under heading into day three, though Poulter’s four-over-par 76 undid much of the good work from day one when sharing the lead with Scotland’s Martin Laird (25/1) with a round of 65. Laird remains in the chasing pack, just two shots off the lead after finishing one over.
Elsewhere, a run of four birdies from the eighth hole saw Tiger Woods (16/1) make the cut after a tricky start by finishing on four under for the round and two under for the tournament alongside 2007 winner Phil Mickelson (33/1).
Last year’s champion, KJ Choi, missed the cut, as did major winners Graeme McDowell, Padraig Harrington, Louis Oosthuizen and Ernie Els.
