Arsenal legend is joint-favourite to take control at Swansea

| 06.06.2012

In a market that has already seen much fluctuation, Dennis Bergkamp has emerged as the new joint-favourite to succeed Brendan Rodgers at Swansea, as an 11/4 chance.

Currently Frank de Boer’s assistant manager at Ajax, Arsenal legend Bergkamp has no previous experience at the helm of a club, but has taken charge of Ajax’s highly-rated youth teams at under-12 and under-19 level.

His odds tumbled for the Swansea job yesterday, as punters piled into him amidst Swans chairman Huw Jenkins’ admittance that the club were searching continentally for potential candidates.

Such has been the support for 43-year-old Bergkamp, that he has now overtaken Ian Holloway at the head of the market, with the Blackpool boss now a 3/1 shot for the post.

Another manager to power past Holloway is Michael Laudrup, who is also afforded an 11/4 price to succeed Brendan Rodgers, meaning he enjoys joint-favouritism with Bergkamp.

The aesthetically pleasing playing style that both Bergkamp and Laudrup would encourage has seen them emerge as very serious contenders for the vacancy in Wales, and Jenkins admits that a penchant for this type of football is essential in his appointment’s make-up.

“There are probably three or four good managers out there in this country,” Jenkins told the South Wales Evening Post.

“Then you could talk about any manager in Spain or Holland and they would probably feel they had the ability to do the job that we want.

“There are managers out there with the right philosophy, but what’s important then is that we find the one with the right personality as well.”

Such quotes seem to indicate that Jenkins is ready and willing to approach a continental manager, though his chief choice remains to be seen.

Bergkamp and Laudrup look set to lead the betting until any further announcement is made, and both look to have very real chances of appointment at an appealing 11/4 price.
