Arsenal poised to pounce for Russia’s Euro 2012 standout star
Published:Russia’s impressive start to Euro 2012 has been characterised by the performances of Alan Dzagoev, and the midfielder’s displays appear to have caught the attention of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.
Dzagoev has smashed three goals in just two appearances in Poland and Ukraine, whilst also collecting a man-of-the-match award as his country racked up four points from their opening two games.
Several clubs are thought to have been alerted by the CSKA Moscow midfielder’s showings, but Arsenal are believed to have the most serious interest in the player, and are ready to make a firm bid for his services.
Despite being out of contract next January, the impressive nature of his tournament displays so far means he would still command a fee in the region of £13million, which Wenger seems willing to pay.
Indeed, the Gunners boss has watched Dzagoev up close, having travelled to the European championships himself, and seems determined to make the Russian part of a major squad overhaul at the Emirates ahead of next season.
With a deal for fellow Germany star Lukas Podolski already concluded, and a move for France striker Olivier Giroud thought to be nearing completion, the Gunners boss is eager to do business early this summer.
Somewhat ironically, Dzagoev could join Arsenal as a replacement for his international team-mate, and man who captains the Russian side, Andrei Arshavin.
Arshavin is keen to end his three-year stint in North London, after falling out of favour over the past two seasons, and settling back on loan at his former club Zenit in the latter stages of last term.
The funds generated from Arshavin’s sale could be put towards a proposal to land Dzagoev, whilst the seemingly imminent departures of Johan Djorou, Marouane Chamakh and Sebastien Squillaci would also go some way to landing the attacking midfielder.
