Canadian Grand Prix: Vettel produces stunning qualifying drive

Sebastian Vettel showed signs that he may be back to his best with a great qualifying drive in Canada that will see him start today’s Grand Prix as the 11/10 favourite.

The reigning champion produced a scintillating Q3 in which he recorded two times that would have seen him secure pole.

This is only Vettel’s second pole of the year and if he can turn it into a place atop of the podium he will become the first two-time winner of an unpredictable season.

Friday’s pace setter Lewis Hamilton is 11/4 to take the flag first and will share the front row with the German, but he couldn’t get within 0.3 seconds, as Vettel re-affirmed his title as the king of qualifying.

However, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has been a profitable location for the McLaren man who has won twice here in 2007 and 2009.

Fernando Alonso was a danger throughout the qualifying session and at one point looked set to take Ferrari’s first pole since 2010, but he will start third and is a tempting 5/1 to win from the second row of the grid.

Monaco winner Mark Webber looks the pick for those wanting an outside punt.

The Australian is fourth on the grid and is 16/1 to make it consecutive wins in Montreal.

Jenson Button’s indifferent season continued.

The 2009 champion almost failed to make Q3 for the second race in a row but scraped in by eight thousandths of a second, but he could do little more and his price of 25/1 reflects his tenth place starting berth.

The driver with the most wins in Canada is Michael Schumacher, but the seven-time race winner had another day to forget back in an F1 car.

The 43-year old was involved in a mix up with his team which meant his final lap in Q3 was abandoned, despite Schumacher being convinced he had crossed the finish line in time.

The confusion meant he qualified ninth and he is 25/1 to make it eight wins in Canada this weekend.
