Flight a bigger worry than Royal Ascot race for Black Caviar trainer

| 06.06.2012

Although Black Caviar’s hugely mouth-watering encounter with Frankel will certainly not be happening at Royal Ascot, the chance to see the mare in action on British soil for the first time will be a major moment in itself.

Black Caviar is usually priced at 1/20 to win races back in Australia on a regular basis, so for this reason alone, the fact she is 4/9 to triumph in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot may look generous odds.

Competition has been minimal at home, with Black Caviar remaining unbeaten through 21 races and often being eased down in the closing stages because of the length of her advantage.

A trip to England to face Frankel has been heavily touted, but finding the right distance for such a race has proved one potential stumbling block, with Frankel wanting a minimum of 1m and ideally 1m2f, while Black Cavier is best over just 6f.

Therefore, if the two were to ever square off it would logically have to be over 7f, but neither party currently has the intention to make the showdown happen.

Instead, Black Caviar is to remain over 6f for her first forage to England for the Group One Diamond Jubilee Stakes and competition seems in short supply.

Bated Breath looks the only serious rival following his victory in the Temple Stakes at Haydock, but connections seem set to swerve the race to tackle the King’s Stand Stakes over the shorter 5f.

Either way, trainer Peter Moody believes that Black Caviar’s first ride on a plane will pose bigger problems than the racecourse, where there are dangers of weight loss, dehydration and small injuries.

However, she is travelling over nice and early and the plan is to allow Black Caviar a few runs on the gallops of Newmarket as the final part of her preparation for Royal Ascot.
