US Open winner one of favourites for Travelers Championship

Fresh from claiming his first major title at the US Open, Webb Simpson heads into tomorrow’s Travelers Championship enjoying joint-favouritism at 14/1.

Simpson turned in arguably the finest display of his professional career at the Olympic Club last week, which in turn saw him land his greatest accolade to date.

He now returns to the more subtle rigours of PGA Tour golf, after an admittance that nerves threatened to overhaul his bid for a maiden major on the last nine holes on Sunday.

A return to that arena will therefore be welcomed by the 26-year-old, who has made the cut in 73 of his 108 PGA appearances, and has three successes to his name in these competitions.

He shares favouritism with three compatriots meanwhile, as Hunter Mahan, Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar are all fellow 14/1 chances in Connecticut.

Mahan may be the most favourable of these players to get behind, bearing in mind his superb form in PGA Tour outings thus far this year.

Indeed, the 30-year-old has achieved two PGA wins thus far in 2012, taking his tally to five overall, and so he should prove popular with punters in this tournament.

That said, Johnson and Kuchar also have PGA Tour wins to their name this year, as Americans thus far have dominated the scene.

Kuchar also turned in his best ever performance in a major tournament earlier this season, when tying third at the Masters, and he may be in prime form to deliver further PGA success here.

Elsewhere, Swede Fredrik Jacobsen is 25/1 to successfully defend the title he acquired at last year’s renewal of the Tour, though it should be noted that that was his only PGA victory to date.

Of other past winners of this competition though, Bubba Watson looks worthy of attention at a big 20/1.

Watson claimed the 2010 Travelers Championship, and his victory at the Masters this year demonstrated his undeniable ability.
