Wealth of options for top Premier League scorer bet at Euro 2012

Published:

A vast array of Premier League talent will partake in Euro 2012, and last season’s Golden Boot winner Robin Van Persie is 4/1 favourite to be top Premier League scorer at the tournament.

Van Persie enjoyed a blistering domestic campaign with Arsenal, smashing 37 goals in all competitions, as the Gunners achieved a third place finish.

He also hit a brace in Holland’s final warm-up game for the competition, notching in a 6-0 demolition of Northern Ireland to push his international scoring average closer to a goal every two games.

However, it should be noted that the striker has struggled in major international tournaments of the past, so could be worth avoiding in this market.

The Dutchman has played in three tournaments, and whilst he has found the net in each of them, his best haul at any one competition has been two goals, back at Euro 2008.

He registered solitary strikes in the other two tournaments he turned out in, and these statistics could serve as a deterrent to punters backing Van Persie to outscore all Premier League talent.

Fernando Torres is next in the betting at 6/1, though poor seasonal form at Chelsea could see him start on the bench on occasions for Spain, with Fernando Llorente possibly favoured.

New Arsenal signing Lukas Podolski is 10/1 meanwhile, and has amassed three strikes in each of his last three major international tournament appearances, so may be worth some investment.

Wayne Rooney faces an uphill battle to land the mantle at 12/1 though, bearing in mind his suspension for England’s first two group games.

Longer priced options could well be worth looking at in the market too, however.

Everton’s Nikica Jelavic is 20/1 to continue his tremendous late season form for Croatia, and after nine Toffees goals in just 13 outings last term, will see some support.

Winger Ashley Young seems a viable option too, at a massive 28/1, and with five goals in his last nine international games, the England star is definitely an appealing each-way prospect.
