Englishman Westwood favourite for French leg of European Tour

| 05.07.2012

In what is an extremely strong field of competitors at this year’s Alstom Open de France, Lee Westwood enjoys 6/1 favouritism ahead of his rivals.

The world number three is bidding for consecutive European Tour successes, after landing the Nordea Masters in early June to take his tally of wins on the circuit to 22.

Westwood’s impressive recent form also includes a top-ten finish in the US Open, whilst he has a strong record in this event, achieving four top-ten finishes in nine appearances.

A runner-up finish has been his best at this particular competition, which he achieved in 2009 when losing a play-off to German Martin Kaymer, who is second favourite for this year’s renewal of the tournament.

Kaymer is a 14/1 shot, following a 15th-place standing in the US Open indicating that a return to his best form may be in the offing.

He has not been out of the top six in his past three outings at this event, and clearly loves the competition he won in 2009.

Thomas Levet will return to defend his crown meanwhile, though chances of the Frenchman retaining his title are deemed far-fetched by Ladbrokes, who afford him a 150/1 price for victory.

Better options could instead be found in the abundance of Ryder Cup participants who will be on show at Le Golf National.

Justin Rose, who currently leads the Race to Dubai standings, is 16/1 to claim a second win on the European circuit this term before linking up with the European squad in September.

Graeme McDowell is a 20/1 hope to triumph, whilst his European teammate, Swede Peter Hanson, is 25/1 to secure the French Open crown.

The captain of the European squad meanwhile, Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal, is a monster 250/1 shot to repeat the success he had at this tournament 11 years ago.
