Spurs offered €40m for Modric, but not from Real Madrid
Published:Luka Modric was initially odds-on to leave Tottenham for Real Madrid before the end of the current transfer window, but PSG have entered negotiations and are threatening to throw a spanner in the works.
Modric is in high demand, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has stood firm on his outlook that the Croatian midfielder will not be allowed to join another Premier League club, hence opening the door for Real Madrid.
However, the Spanish champions cannot afford to pay the asking price for Modric and so are still attempting to find a way to fund a deal.
Offering Ricardo Carvalho as part of the deal was one potential avenue, but with Tottenham recently signing Jan Vertonghen, this is looking more unlikely.
Therefore, with Real Madrid stalling, French moneybags PSG believe that the door has opened for them to snatch Modric.
They certainly have no financial concerns and are in the hunt for a host of the world’s top players in order to have a serious thrust at the Champions League.
Ezequiel Lavezzi has already arrived from Napoli, while they have not given up on a double swoop in AC Milan for Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
On top of this, they have reportedly offered €40m for Modric and this is close to the figure that Tottenham may be willing to accept for a player that clearly wants to leave.
The big question remains whether Modric would be willing to join PSG, as even though they could offer him Champions League football, the squad at present looks short of the required standard to be a major force.
Working with Carlo Ancelotti is something that may appeal to Modric and then the onus is on the former Chelsea manager to convince the midfielder that he and the club have similar aspirations.
