Wiggins favourite for SPOTY after overcoming the Pyrenees

Bradley Wiggins has been cut to the 6/5 favourite to win the BBC Sports Personality of the year after another impressive day in the saddle at the Tour de France.

Wiggins was as big as 5/1 last week to win the Sports Personality of the Year award last week but following his excellent work in the Pyrenees on the last two stages, it’s now hard to see how he won’t win the overall standings in Paris.

He’s 1/25 to win the tour and with Chris Froome – who is currently second in the overall standings – pacing Wiggins up the climbs, that win looks even more likely.

There is a new appreciation of cycling in Britain and Wiggins would follow his Sky teammate Mark Cavendish in claiming the coveted award.

With Sir Chris Hoy now only entering two events at the Olympics, it’s hard to see how any individual could surpass Wiggins’ achievement.

Andy Murray (8/1) may now be more popular having shown his human side after his Wimbledon final defeat but but he would surely need to win Olympic gold to even be in contention – and Wiggins could even add a gold medal in the Olympic time trial in which he is amongst the favourites.

He may be at short odds, but Wiggins could be a very tempting bet to win the BBC Sports Personality of the year award to go along with his yellow jersey.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “The smart SPOTY money is on Wiggins. It’s a big marker that he’s already the overwhelming favourite before the other Olympians strut their stuff in Stratford.”
