Wiggins massive favourite for Tour de France as Sky coast
Published:Bradley Wiggins has been cut to 1/7 to win the Tour de France as yet another day in the yellow jersey awaits on Wednesday.
Wiggins is part of the Sky team that has increasingly bossed the peleton over the past couple of days and yesterday allowed a break away group to easily get away from them as they slowed the pace ahead of two brutal stages in the Pyrenees this week.
The leading contenders for the tour were all comfortably in the peleton and things remain unchanged, with Sky teammate Chris Froome 2.05minutes behind Wiggins in second place.
Froome is currently 5/1 to win the tour but the 27-year-old is there to support Wiggins, not compete with him and, while the expert climber may be a decent bet to win the event next year, this year he has little chance of claiming the yellow jersey.
It would take something monumental for Wiggins to now lose the event but, as we saw on Sunday when tacks were thrown on to the course, there is always a chance of something dramatic happening.
Wiggins has been nicknamed ‘Le Gentleman’ in France because of his behaviour on that stage, when he slowed the peleton to allow Cadel Evans to rejoin them after he suffered a series of punctures.
The reigning champion is currently 3.19minutes adrift of Wiggins and has been shunted out to 33/1 in the betting behind third favourite Vincenzo Nibali who is 28/1 to win the event.
Realistically though, it’s Wiggins’ tour to lose and, even at 1/7, he could be well worth backing for a decent if not spectacular pay out.
