14:55 Doncaster: Ambivalent gets tentative vote from Wild Coco

| 13.09.2012

Wild Coco has a lot going for her in the biggest race on the second day of Doncaster’s St Leger festival, but Ambivalent remains open to improvement and can claim a slightly surprise success.

Ambivalent is 5/1 to triumph in the Park Hill Stakes and arrives only having had five career starts, alongside being a daughter of former Epsom Derby winner Authorized.

The latest of these came at Newbury over a useful yardstick in Set To Music and the manner of this victory suggested that the step up to 1m6f would be no hindrance.

She travelled particularly well that day before showing a decent turn of foot to put the race to bed and although Ambivalent has plenty to find on official ratings, the race is not as open as it may seem.

Wild Coco is the 7/4 favourite and returned from almost a year off to secure the Lillie Langtry Stakes at Goodwood last month.

A repeat of this Group Three performance could be enough to win this and punters are entitled to actually expect an improvement.

However, although seemingly the best horse in the race, she can need big breaks between her races and there are doubts as to whether she will run to the same level again so soon.

Estimate finished third at Goodwood and is most fancied to lay down the strongest challenge again at 3/1.

But the Queen’s runner is arguably better over 2m and does not seem to have the closing speed to compete with some of these over 1m6f.

Kailani would be a threat based on her form from earlier in the season, but has been below par on her last two starts and as a result is hard to have confidence with.

Sir Michael Stoute’s Monshak is interesting as an each-way option at 25/1, but was very temperamental last time and this brings concerns.
