Course and distance form brings Arabian Star into Cambridgeshire

| 28.09.2012

Arabian Star has run well below par on his two latest starts, but this may not be a reason to give up on him at 40/1 to win the Cambridgeshire at his favoured Newmarket.

He triumphed on his first visit to the track 12 months ago when winning the consolation race for the Cambridgeshire, which is for horses that just fail to make it into the main field.

Arabian Star then returned to Newmarket for his first start of the current Flat season, securing another handicap victory.

Things have gone slightly wrong since for Arabian Star, finishing well down the field in the Royal Hunt Cup and then producing another bad Ascot run in the Shergar Cup Mile.

However, a return to Newmarket could be the fillip needed for a return to form, alongside a race over 1m1f.

Alongside never having been beaten at Newmarket, Arabian Star has a two-from-two record over the Cambridgeshire trip.

Additionally in his favour seems to be the draw, as half of the last ten winners have started close to the middle of the track rather than up against the rails.

Arabian Star has stall 11 this year and also fits in with the general age and weight trends of the typical winner in the last decade.

The only big negative that he will have to overcome is form on the ground, with Arabian Star seemingly producing his best on a firmer surface in the past.

Course form is important in a race like the Cambridgeshire and there are two other entrants that are still to be beaten at Newmarket.

Mukhadram is the current 6/1 favourite and has won twice at the track, while Rewarded triumphed on his sole start at Newmarket and can be backed at 14/1.
