Duminy the man to watch for South Africa across whole T20 series

Published:

JP Duminy is traditionally one of South Africa’s most destructive batsmen in the T20 form of cricket and he will have a leading role to play in the third series this summer with England.

South Africa took over at the head of the Test rankings with victory in this particular series, while a 2-2 draw in the 50-over game meant that England just clung on to top spot.

For the first time this summer, it is South Africa putting a top spot on the line, with England looking to overhaul them with a success across the three T20 fixtures.

South Africa are marginal favourites to win the opener at Chester-le-Street at 4/5 and come in having triumphed in 10 of their last 13 T20 contests.

However, England will want a strong series as a final preparation for the defence of the T20 World Cup crown and themselves have won six of their last eight in this format of the game.

This suggests a tight series, but in terms of a correct score, South Africa have to be preferred to prevail 2-1 at 13/8, with the hosts without star batsmen Kevin Pietersen and dangerous bowler in the 20-over game Steve Finn.

No chances are being taken in the market for England’s top runscorer in the first game, with six players all priced up at 4/1.

Alex Hales is still a rookie on the international stage, but showed his capabilities with 99 against the West Indies earlier this year.

If he can be similarly destructive against a more deadly attack, he could be a sensible option from this group.

For South Africa, Duminy sticks out at 5/1 to top the South African scorecard at Chester-le-Street and even more so at 9/1 to be their leading runscorer across the three matches.

He has top-scored for the Proteas in four of their last nine T20 fixtures, surpassing 40 on four occasions in this time.
