Struggling Liverpool keen on audacious double La Liga swoop

| 17.10.2012

Liverpool, sitting in 14th place under new manager Brendan Rodgers, are undoubtedly underachieving seven games into this latest renewal of the Premier League season.

A lack of squad depth has failed to help matters, with mounting injury concerns currently leaving Rodgers with his hands tied in terms of attacking options.

Only nine goals have emanated from the Reds’ seven league outings this term, and with Luis Suarez currently the club’s only fit striker, Rodgers is hoping to strengthen his squad in January.

The former Swansea boss is ready to raid La Liga, with a move for Atletico Madrid’s Turkish winger Arda Turan thought to be on the horizon.

Scouts from the Anfield outfit are thought to have spied on the wide man during Turkey’s 1-0 win over Romania last week, and were impressed by the 25-year-old’s contribution.

Ex-Galatasaray player Turan is a self-confessed Liverpool supporter, and would likely welcome the chance to turn out at Anfield, should the opportunity arise.

He would not come cheap however, after impressing greatly in the Spanish capital since a €12 million move from his homeland last summer.

Turan is not the only player the Reds are in the market for though, with Rodgers expected to test Barcelona’s resolve for pacy Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez.

23-year-old Sanchez, who can operate comfortably on either flank, or as a central striker, enjoyed a positive debut campaign at the Nou Camp last term under Pep Guardiola.

But in the aftermath of Guardiola’s departure from the Catalan giants, he has fallen down the pecking order somewhat under new coach Tito Vilanova.

Usually considered a regular starter, Sanchez has begun less than half of Barca’s eight league games so far this season, and may be allowed to leave, if only temporarily.

A permanent move for Sanchez, who cost Barca €26m only last summer, appears far-fetched currently, but a loan move to Anfield can be envisaged in the new year.
