Alonso 4/1 to get his revenge on Vettel for 2010 F1 final-day failure

Rewind back two seasons and the boot was clearly on the other foot with Fernando Alonso leading the drivers’ championship heading into the final race, with Sebastian Vettel needing to make up a 15-point deficit.

However, a slow start and then major issues attempting to overtake Renault’s Vitaly Petrov meant that Alonso could only finish seventh, handing the title to Vettel with his race victory.

Now it is Alonso that has nothing to lose as he has 13 points to make up on Vettel heading into the final race and it is 4/1 that he gets his revenge by overhauling the Red Bull man to become world champion.

Alonso must finish in the first three at the Brazilian Grand Prix if he is to stand any chance of overtaking Vettel, with a host of permutations eventually deciding who will take the title.

The basic scenario is that Vettel is world champion if he finishes in the top four, regardless of where Alonso ends up, and the good news for him is that the duo have both been on the podium in each of the last four races.

But the Red Bull has had some reliability issues, with Vettel twice encountering alternator problems and then teammate Red Bull suffering the same failure in the latest race in the US.

Meanwhile, on the 26 previous occasions that the Formula One title has gone to the final race, ten world champions have not led heading into the weekend.

Furthermore, the Brazilian Grand Prix must hold positive memories for Alonso, as it has twice been the scene of him being crowned world champion.

Alonso is 7/2 to win the Brazilian Grand Prix, which puts him third favourite behind Vettel and US Grand Prix winner Lewis Hamilton on what will be his last start before jumping ship from McLaren to Mercedes.
