Hughes a clear favourite to replace sacked Berg at Blackburn

Published:

Mark Hughes is the 11/8 favourite to return for a second stint as Blackburn manager after the club sacked Henning Berg despite just 57 days in charge.

There is no denying that Berg’s spell in charge has been largely disappointing, but he would have expecting more than two months to bring his style and ideas to the club.

This would have especially been expected given that it took the club an age to sack Steve Kean, despite constant supporter unrest and poor results over an extended period.

The funny thing about Kean was that when he was finally forced to resign, Blackburn were flying in the dizzy heights of third in the Championship table and just two points off top spot.

Now they are down in 17th after Berg took just seven points from his 10 league games in charge, a run which includes a single victory and a lonely point of late from a possible 18.

The availability of Hughes may be one reason for the new direction of ruthlessness as an instant return to the Premier League is sought.

Hughes saw himself removed at QPR earlier this season in a similar situation when Harry Redknapp became on the market, but whether he would want to work under the circus of the Venky Group remains to be seen.

He would surely be welcomed by supporters given the success of his four-season stint between 2004 and 2008, finishing in the top ten of the Premier League in his three completed seasons in charge.

Elsewhere in the next Blackburn manager betting, Sean O’Driscoll is next at 8/1 to make an instant return to the Championship after his recent sacking from Nottingham Forest.

Tim Sherwood is 10/1 and he was a leading candidate for the job before Berg was appointed, with Roberto Di Matteo available at 12/1.
