It can pay to side with French stars in Sunday’s Australian Open ties
Published:As the latter stages of the Australian Open fast approach, a number of intriguing clashes are in prospect as competitors bid for a quarter-final berth.
And whilst the likes of Roger Federer and Andy Murray are in action, we look to a less high-profile talent to kick off our accumulator on Sunday’s matches.
That comes in the form of Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, who is riding the crest of a wave after his surprise triumph over Juan Martin Del Potro in the previous round.
Chardy is an 11/10 shot to overcome Italian Andreas Seppi, who scraped through to this stage via a narrow win against Marin Cilic.
This will be the first meeting of the players, but Chardy, more impressive than his opponent on hard courts, looks overpriced to advance.
He can be joined in the quarter-final by compatriot Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, with the powerhouse 4/7 to best his Davis Cup team-mate Richard Gasquet.
Tsonga is in terrific form, having failed to drop a set throughout the tournament thus far, and he can build on his 2-1 head-to-head record with Gasquet on hard courts.
In the women’s clashes meanwhile, Caroline Wozniacki faces a tough task in the form of Russia’s two-time Grand Slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Kuznetsova edged the most recent meeting of the pair in Sydney earlier this year, and we take her to do so again here at a tempting 6/5.
Agnieszka Radwanka then rounds off our accumulator, with the ruthless Pole 8/13 to dispose of Na Li.
Radwanka is in blistering form, having succeeded in each of her last 13 outings, and having amassed two WTA titles already this year.
Her two prior appearances to this saw her achieve straight sets victories, and punters will be confident she can deliver again here.
An accumulator on the four selections would return at more than 10/1.
