West Brom v Southampton: Hosts to overturn half time deficit to win

Published:

West Brom have a strong record when taking on Southampton, having lost just one of their last eight league matches against them.

The Baggies also did the double over them last season, winning 2-0 and 3-0 respectively. Based on this the west Midlanders look a generous price at 6/5 to start the campaign with three points.

Southampton traditionally struggle in the league curtain raiser, having won just one of their previous 14 opening-day Premier League fixtures. And with just two teams drawing more than the Saints last season, a draw represents better value at 23/10.

The Saints however will be boasting an in-form Rickie Lambert and fresh from scoring on his England debut, he can be backed to score here in the 90 minutes once again at 9/4.

Elsewhere, Mauricio Pochettino’s men are coming into the game with injury concerns and look set to be without their first choice full backs Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw.

Although the Saints have again reinvested in their squad, they are expected to have to call upon 18-year-old Callum Chambers to make his debut.

West Brom conversely are free from injuries and have a strong record at the Hawthorns.

Although an outright win against Southampton holds little mileage here, the Baggies can be backed at 20/1 to recover from a half-time deficit against a side who threw away 29 points from winning positions last season.

West Brom also have a new look frontline this year with the experienced Nicolas Anelka potentially a good price to be the last player to score at 11/2. Alternatively, Matej Vydra, the Championship player of the year last season, looks appealing at 6/1 to complete the scoring on his debut for West Brom.
