2013 NFL Draft: Five to watch
Published:Last year’s Draft was dominated by franchise-quarterbacks Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III, but this year many believe no QBs warrant being chosen in the first round, something that has not happened since 1996.
As a result, here are a list of five guys who could be at the top of the wish list of those holding the first picks.
1. Luke Joeckel #1 PICK – Kansas City Chiefs
The Texas A&M offensive tackle is many an expert’s go-to pick and widely considered to be someone that could anchor an offensive line for years to come. The Kansas City Chiefs have a dilemma as many believe Michigan’s Eric Fisher would be a better selection, despite no-one denying the skill-set that Joeckel possesses. His run and pass game are difficult to match and whoever gets him will be hoping that he becomes a team stalwart for a generation.
2. Eric Fisher #2 PICK – Jacksonville Jaguars
If the Chiefs don’t take him then the Jacksonville Jaguars almost certainly will. Fisher is seen as one of the few in recent times that could live up to the standards now being set by 2007 first-round pick Joe Staley and as the Draft has approached much of the talk has been directed to this increasingly exciting prospect. His incredible agility on the field and crowd-stopping physique makes him an obvious selection on opening night.
3. Lane Johnson #3 PICK – Oakland Raiders
Another offensive tackle with extraordinary athletic attributes that have enabled him to switch positions from tight end at Oklahoma. Despite being 6ft 6” Johnson has no problem keeping his balance and maintaining strong pad level, being astute enough to maintain distance from his defender with his hands and length. A lack of experience in the position will be a concern, but if given time it could be a risk that continues to be worth it long into the future.
4. Ziggy Ansah #4 PICK – Philadelphia Eagles
The Brigham Young defensive end cannot be considered as being solely focused on football after trying out track and basketball before he found his calling. Despite doubts about his future, Ansah led his specials team on tackles and earned a prominent role out of preseason camp. In his one season as a full time starter, he tallied 62 tackles making him one of the most sought after in 2013.
5. Chance Warmack #5 PICK – Detroit Lions
Alabama’s offensive guard has been widely credited with much of the success of the Crimson Tide’s running attack, and there will be plenty of teams keen to see if the 317 lb’er can do the same for their team on the big stage. Renowned for a strong punch that has shocked many oncoming defenders in his college years, he is also mobile enough react to a variety of assaults from defence. He has been accused of losing leverage battles in key situations but many will believe that in time that can be improved.
