In-form Graeme McDowell can end Wentworth jinx at PGA Championship

New world No. 7 Graeme McDowell has never had much luck at Wentworth, but then he’s rarely headed to the Surrey course in better form that he’s in right now.

The Northern Irishman came from two down after four holes to defeat Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee 2&1 to win the World Match Play final at the Bulgarian coastal resort of Kavarna on Sunday – a year after he was the beaten finalist at the same event, which has been won by illustrious names such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Seve Ballesteros in the past.

This time around saw the 2010 US Open winner’s second victory in his last three tournaments, a win which ensured that he enters Thursday’s BMW PGA Championship – for which he is tantalisingly priced at 20/1 – in the highest of spirits.

‘G-Mac’ has failed to make the cut on his previous two visits to Wentworth though, with his best finish in 10 years of competing at the course seeing him tie for a lowly 13th.

But following the win in Bulgaria and a victory at the RBC Heritage in South Carolina earlier this month McDowell is in terrific form, and he is priced at 13/8 to beat his best  showing at Wentworth and record a top 10 finish.

Up against the likes of Luke Donald, Justin Rose, Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy, Portrush putter McDowell is a tempting 11/1 to finish as the top GB & Ireland player at the PGA Championship, whilst with McIlroy the key competition he is the second favourite to be the top Irish player at 11/5.

With the form he’s in, those Wentworth woes look like being a thing of the past.
