Mackay and Martinez head Everton boss betting

In a constantly fluctuating market, Roberto Martinez and Malky Mackay share favouritism for the vacant Everton job.

Both can be backed at 5/2 to replace Manchester United-bound David Moyes at Goodison Park, though the Scot represents the better value for money.

Mackay is very much in the Moyes ilk; not only do they share the same nationality and playing position, his achievements in the lower leagues and reputable standing in the management game will appeal to frugal chairman Bill Kenwright.

Mackay, having achieved a feat that so many others made look impossible – getting Cardiff City promoted to the Premier League – has actually accomplished more than Moyes did whilst working his way up the ladder and being presented such an opportunity as to manage to Toffees means he is unlikely to command large transfer budgets, as a bigger name candidate would.

The trouble, however, will be prying him away from the Championship champions. A large compensation package would no doubt need to be agreed which is sure to deter an Everton approach, while there’s no guarantee that the manager himself would want to desert the Welsh club having earned promotion just a month earlier.

If they fail in the pursuit of Mackay, a decent outside bet would be 33/1 shot, Mark Hughes.

The former QPR boss has proved that, if you give him money, by and large, he doesn’t know what to do with it, but he wouldn’t have that very nice at problem on the blue half of Merseyside and could set about rebuilding the strong reputation he forged himself from sterling efforts at Fulham and, most notably, Blackburn.
Martin O’Neill also represents a good shout at 25s.

The Ulsterman offers similar philosophies and mentality to that of Moyes and could easily build on the good work of the departing Scot. However, the only negative with regards to O’Neill is that he loves to splash the cash, as any Aston Villa fan will attest, and this isn’t an option for the next Toffees rudder-man.
