14:30 Royal Ascot: No Nay Never to give Ward a winner

Published:

Wesley Ward has been training independently for 20 years and has had his fair share of talented two-year-old runners in this time.

Therefore, comments that No Nay Never is the best horse that Ward has ever trained in this age group must be respected and make him the a fine price at 5/1 to win the Norfolk Stakes.

No Nay Never has only had the one career start to date and this offered no distinct clues as to his future potential as he was barely shaken up to triumph in a three-runner contest in the US.

It goes without saying that this Group 2 contest over the ultimate sprint trip of 5f will be far tougher, but the overseas raider does adhere to many of the trends of former winners.

What is of most interest is that only two of the winners of the Norfolk since 1991 were successful having not triumphed on their final start before Royal Ascot, although this does not drastically reduce the potential victors in this year’s field.

Meanwhile, five of the last seven winners also preserved their unbeaten records in this race, which does go against the 2/1 favourite Coach House, who was beaten on his Irish debut for Aidan O’Brien at the Curragh, but has won twice since.

But O’Brien has already had three winners at Royal Ascot this year and the form of his Listed success last time has worked out well.

Another unbeaten horse who it could pay to follow is Saayerr at 8/1 from the William Haggas yard, who made it two from two last time when getting up by a short head at Windsor.

This form is worth remembering as five of the 11 last winners of the Norfolk had a previous victory or second at Windsor on their resumes before Royal Ascot.
