Silva against either Jones or GSP worthy of UFC anniversary

November 2013 is a big month in the history of UFC as it will represent the 20th anniversary of the organisation and there will surely be a major fight announced to bring more attention to the landmark.

UFC 45 marked the 10-year anniversary of the organisation and alongside a welterweight title fight, the event also saw the inaugural two members inducted to the UFC Hall of Fame.

This time the speculation is that president Dana White wants to create the biggest card in UFC history, surpassing the battles that were scheduled for UFC 100.

On that occasion, Ultimate Fighter coaches Dan Henderson and Michael Bisping squared off, Georges St-Pierre defended his welterweight belt against Thiago Alves and a heavyweight title match took place between champion Brock Lesnar and interim champ Frank Mir.

A superfight would be the obvious way to better this and logic would determine that Anderson Silva, the longest running champion in UFC history, would be in the main event, assuming that he makes a 12th successful defence against Chris Weidman first.

To make the superfight that fans would want, Silva would require St-Pierre to step up to middleweight or the Brazilian would have to step up himself to light-heavyweight as he has before to tackle champion Jon Jones.

Jones is the best wrestler in the light-heavyweight division and if the fight went to the ground there would realistically only be one winner, especially with Jones being the physically stronger of the pair.

Meanwhile, Silva has been known to struggle to prevent takedowns from the elite at this art, while the reach advantage he enjoys in virtually all his fights wouldn’t exist against Jones.

This would be significant as Silva tends to rely on this advantage to land counter punches as opponents close in too much looking to land their own shots.

Silva and GSP has been a touted fight for the best part of five years and is the least likely of the two, with suggestions that the welterweight champ is holding off so that it can be saved for his last career bout.

This fight is much tougher to call, with GSP being especially strong in striking defence and takedown accuracy and the winner could solely come down to which weight such a fight would take place at.

If it was at the welterweight limit of 170lb, GSP would win, at the middleweight limit of 185lb, Silva would win.

A catchweight in the middle would be interesting, with Silva probably favourite at anything of 178lb or higher, with 175lb potentially the point where it would be extremely close to call.
