Higuain signing gives Napoli the look of Serie A champions

| 25.07.2013

Gonzalo Higuain is set to become the second most expensive player to ever depart Real Madrid as he makes the move to Napoli.

The Italian club have agreed a €37 million euro deal with Los Blancos for the services of the Argentinian striker, as they look to fill the void left by Edinson Cavani’s switch to Paris Saint-Germain.

Higuian averages a goal every other game and is more than capable of matching the departed Uruguayan in terms of goals scored.

The River Plate youth product also chips in with assists with nine last term and 10 the year before.

The capture of such an established talent is a major coup for Rafa Benitez’s men as he looks to build a squad capable of challenging champions Juventus.

The Neapolitans are 15/2 to lift the Scudetto trophy, and their action in the transfer market suggests that price may well be a little long.

Along with the imminent arrival of the world class striker will be the signing of Pepe Reina from Liverpool.

The Spanish international was signed by Benitez at Anfield and has gone on to be one of the club’s greatest ever keepers.

He has lost his way slightly over the last couple of seasons and the signing of Simon Mignolet sealed his fate on Merseyside.

A change of scenery will doubtless revive the shot-stopper and if he finds his best form once again, he could be a base upon which the Partonopei can build their title challenge.

The ex-Liverpool manager has utlised his strong links with the Bernabeu, where he cut his teeth as a youth team coach, further to bring in Raul Albiol and Jose Callejon.

The former has been unlucky, with the emergence of the unflappable Raphael Varane keeping him out of the team. He will feel he has dropped off the radar somewhat in his time in Madrid and will be eager to reproduce the performances that made him one of Europe’s most sought-after defenders when at Valencia.

Callejon is a player who was used sparingly by Real, but despite many of his appearances coming from the bench he still managed to notch 20 goals in his two-year spell and should thrive alongside a player he knows well in Higuain.
