Sara Errani the value bet at Flushing Meadows

Last season represented a huge breakthrough for Sara Errani.

Prior to 2012, the Italian number one had never progressed past the third-round of a Grand Slam, but a quarter-final at the French Open, a semi-final at the US Open and a runner-up spot at Melbourne Park laid rest to her previous early round disappointment.

Her performance at Flushing Meadows was an excellent one, knocking out Angelique Kerber and compatriot Roberta Vinci before losing to champion-elect Serena Williams

At 150/1 she is the only woman in the top-ten with triple-figure odds and certainly represents value for each-way bettors.

The world number six has been in decent form on the hard court this year, reaching the quarter-finals at Indian Wells where she lost to eventual winner Maria Sharapova. While the defeat came in straight sets, it was a closely fought encounter with Sharapova requiring a tiebreak to claim the first. Errani suffered a similar fate in Miami, losing 7-5, 7-5 to the Russian who again went on to reach the final.

However, with wins over Ana Ivanovic and Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, she is clearly capable of overcoming high quality opposition.

This season, her best performance in a Grand Slam came at the French Open where she reached the last four before losing to eventual winner and world-number-one Williams though many will remember her disappointing first round exit at Wimbledon to Monica Puig recently, although grass is far from her favourite surface.

If she gets a decent draw this time, there is no reason she could not make another Grand Slam final, especially if she can avoid Williams whose power is often too much for her.
